Kyra also serves as co-founder of the Hayes Hitzeman Foundation. The Foundation supports the research and awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Kyra realized the need for the Foundation through the death of her own 4 ½ month old son. She is committed to supporting the research and awareness of SIDS, the number one cause of death in infants 12 months or younger, by providing support to bereaved parents, and by educating expecting parents and their families, caregivers and health professionals about the prevention of SIDS deaths. Since its inception in 2002, the Hayes Hitzeman Foundation has raised nearly $500,000 for SIDS research. The Foundation launched the This Side Up campaign, an effort that seeks to raise awareness of SIDS by outfitting babies in Richmond-area hospitals with special “onesies” that remind parents to put their babies to sleep on their backs.
